ONE HAND, NO SLEEP, NO TIME: MEALS FOR BUSY PARENTS
Wednesday March 29th
7pm to 8:30pm
Athens Public Library

Join the experts from Live Healthy Appalachia as they share ways in which busy parents old and new can prepare healthy and easy snacks, make “meals that aren’t quite meals” (smoothies, etc.) and create “autopilot” meals (think slow cooker meals) to help their families eat well and have more time together. They will also be demonstrating some of their food suggestions. Bring your questions and plan to join us later this month for a great meeting!

Are you a young mom who would like to spend some time learning and socializing with other young moms and their children? Well this is the group for you! Come join us for a fun time learning, sharing and playing. Open to all younger moms old and new, so if you were under 22 year of age when you had your first child, then come join us and share your experiences as a young mom. We’ll even have a craft to do and some food to eat! We can’t wait to see you!

Join us tonight and learn about PTSD as it relates to your loss. Dawn Graham, PhD, will share what she has studied about surviving trauma and living with PTSD.
If you are in need of support because of a pregnancy loss or the loss of your child, you are welcome to join us every first Thursday of the month for this support group. These meetings are free and facilitated by a professional social worker. All family members, such as grandparents, siblings, aunts and uncles, as well as friends are welcome. Childcare is provided.

JIVE!
When:  December 31st, 2016.  The party starts at 5pm and will go until 8pm, with the ball dropping at 7:30pm. This way the whole family can enjoy the celebration.

Where:  Located at Eclipse Company Store, 11309 Jackson Dr., The Plains

Food & Drink:  This year’s JIVE! party will include dinner by Kiser’s BBQ and desserts from Fluff Bakery.  The kids can enjoy Snowville Creamery chocolate milk, while a cash bar will be available for adults to choose from a variety of beverages, featuring local brews.

Music & Prizes:  Entertainment will include live music by the Wireless Ramblers, dancing and multiple kids’ activities, including a photo booth. We will be giving away many door prizes generously donated by local businesses and agencies.  A nursing room for babies and their families will be provided as well.

Why:  As one of the largest fundraisers for the Birth Circle, we hope you don’t miss out on this fun opportunity to ring in the New Year with other families while supporting the work we do!  We would love to see you there!

For Tickets:  You may purchase tickets online by following this link to our Eventbrite JIVE! page until 3pm on 12/31.  You can also purchase tickets at Fluff Bakery, located at 8 N. Court St. in Athens through 12/30. Tickets are $15 per adult ($20 at the door) and $5 ($10 at the door) for each child three and up. Tickets will be available at the door until sold out.

How you can help:  This event cannot happen without dedicated volunteers!  Some jobs can be done in advance, others the morning of the event or during the event, and some can even be completed in the comfort of your own home. Good Morning Everyone!
 
Here we are…November, a month full of excitement and gratitude.  In keeping with those themes, The Birth Circle is offering a month of really great events, including our monthly meeting about postpartum recovery.  See below for more details about this meeting, as well as information about our Play Group and Loss Support Group.  Also below you will find information on volunteering for JIVE!  This fabulous family-friendly event is on the horizon and we’re excited for another fun evening of celebration!
The season of giving is upon us and we would love to have your help.  Every few years we put out an Impact Survey which helps us gauge your wants and needs, and helps us stay relevant in our community.  We would love to hear from you, so please consider taking this short survey by following the link provided below.

OUR POSTPARTUM BODIES:  PELVIC FLOOR & ABDOMINAL RECOVERY AFTER CHILDBIRTH
Wednesday, November 30th

At the Athens Public Library

Our bodies work hard during pregnancy and childbirth, and sometimes there’s more to recover from than we were expecting.  Join physical therapists Angel Thomas, PT, OCS and Allison Barnett, PT of OhioHealth to learn more about common postpartum diagnoses such as pelvic pain, incontinence and diastasis recti.  They will also share helpful tips to manage these including some exercises to help you recover.  Bring your questions and experiences to share!

The days have grown shorter and we’re all gearing up for tricks and treats this week. One lovely treat coming your way is The Birth Circle’s monthly meeting on Wednesday! We have a wonderfully informative meeting scheduled and we hope you join us. Many of us are curious about fostering and adoption opportunities in our area, and this month we have one of our local experts from Athens County Children Services coming to share information and answer your questions. Hello Everyone!

We have a lovely month of events ahead of us. October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness month and we have a special afternoon planned to honor those families who have experienced the loss of a child. All are welcome and please feel free to share the details with others. Please see below for more about our Loss Ceremony, as well as for information about our monthly meeting.

For our October monthly meeting, we are excited to host an evening of learning about adoption and fostering in our area. If you’ve been a foster parent or have adopted children of your own we would love to have you join us and share your experiences.

CEREMONY HONORING PREGNANCY & INFANT LOSS
Sunday, October 16th at 3:00pm
Athens Community Center Playground
701 East State St. Athens, OH

The Birth Circle will hold a ceremony at the Athens Community Center’s “Ribbon Tree,” planted near the playground in April of this year as a memorial to honor and celebrate the short lives of babies lost through miscarriage, stillbirth or in infancy. This year’s ceremony will include readings and a time of sharing, as well as time to tie a ribbon of your choice on the tree. The event is open to the public, and children are welcome to attend. If parents are unable to attend the ceremony but would like their child’s name or due date spoken, or a particular poem or prayer read, they can contact Claudia or Julia at athensbirthcircle@gmail.com or 740-652-6262.

We hope you’ll join us for a new take on our Annual Birth Circle Family Reunion Picnic this Wednesday, August 31st at Little Fish Brewing Company.  Meet friends old and new, enjoy a tasty beverage, eat delicious food and let the kids play in the lingering summer sunshine.  What better way is there to spend the last Wednesday of August?
On the heels of this monthly gathering follow our Play Group and Loss Support Group.  These two regular monthly meetings offer two unique chances to connect with other families in safe and supportive environments.  Both are free and open to the public.  See below for more information.

KEEP IN MIND:
  • Parking is limited, PLEASE car pool, OR take advantage of the link to the Hock Hocking Adena Bike Path, and bike over with the family
  • Food will be available for purchase or you may bring your own dinner
  • A tent will be set up outside for shade
  • Stay for the Old Time Jam–if you’re musically inclined, bring your instruments too!

Hello Everyone!

What a great month we have ahead of us with so many fantastic events going on!!! It is a month of play, support, two rockin’ Yard Sales, and to round things out, a super-fun Family Reunion Picnic at Little Fish Brewing Company. Sure, some of the kids are heading back to school, but we can all take a moment to rejoice in the season and reconnect with friends at one or more of these fun events. For a twelfth year in a row the Birth Circle and La Leche League are hosting a fundraising Yard Sale to round out the summer. If you need baby and mama-related items, books, and other family goodies, this is the place to shop! Come check out the wares and support two incredible community organizations at the same time. We can’t wait to see you there!

Saturday, August 27th–8am to 2pm, rain or shine (no early sales please!)

Once you’re finished shopping at the Birth Circle & LLL Yard Sale, head on down the road to the new location of the Ohio Valley Museum of Discovery for more yard sale fun! They will have food and kids’ activities, and your purchases will help support their programming as well!

UPCOMING VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

  • Prepare a meal for a family with a new baby! We have several families with new babies who would love to receive meals now and later this summer! Our Meals for Moms program is one of the Birth Circle’s greatest success stories. Postpartum families who would like to have help in the form of meals may sign up with us sometime during their pregnancy. After the baby arrives, the family notifies the Meals for Moms coordinator, who then organizes the meals. Meals are prepared and delivered by Birth Circle volunteers like YOU. If you are interested cooking a meal, please click here to fill out our online form or contact coordinator Ariel Carver, arielrose.carver@gmail.com.

 

  • Nelsonville Library’s Breastfeeding Diaper Changing Respite at the Parade of the Hills–Wednesday August 17th and Thursday August 18th, anytime between 1-5pm
    Volunteers needed to “woman” and “man” this oasis for parents & caregivers.

If you are wondering what your current choices for birth control are, or if you’ve felt overwhelmed by the options available, this is the meeting for you!  Sarah Saxbe, Program Coordinator for Nationwide Childrens’ Teen and Pregnant Program and BC for Teens Program, joins us this month to talk about the different methods available to you, including STD prevention, as well as how to access these birth control options and other related health-care resources in our community.  Come with your questions and experiences to share!

We are looking for donations for our annual yard sale which will take place on Friday, August 26th from noon-5pm and Saturday, August 27th from 8am-2pm at the East State Street Shelter (near the Community Pool). If you have maternity, baby and child-related items to donate which are gently used and in good working order, please bring them to 102 Sunnyside in Athens. TEEN & YOUNG MOM SUPPORT GROUP

This group for young moms began as a way to continue support after Prepared Mommy Camp. The group meets once a month. This month’s meeting is a potluck. Bring food to share! Young moms are welcome to attend with their children.

JULY LOSS SUPPORT GROUP PICNIC

If you are in need of support because of a pregnancy loss or the loss of your child, you are welcome to join us every first Thursday of the month for this support group.  These meetings are free and facilitated by a professional social worker.  All family members, such as grandparents, siblings, aunts and uncles, as well as friends are welcome.  Childcare is provided.
