January 2018 News & Events

Happy New Year Everyone!

The new year is bringing a new phase for the Birth Circle this year, most notably that this is my first email as the new Director of the Birth Circle. For those of you who don’t know me, I am a stay at home mom to Lucia (4) and Violet (3 months). I moved to a little parcel in Wayne National Forest in 2013 with my partner and tiny bump of a first trimester baby. We have since added various animals, way too many home improvement projects, and two daughters, both born in swift and beautiful home births attended by several of our amazing local midwives and doulas. We chose Athens County in part to be close to family but also because we had heard about the wonderful support of the Birth Circle and the sustainably minded community with good access to fresh local food! I am passionate about empowering women in general, and specifically in the areas of childbirth and rearing, breastfeeding, and owning our reproductive health and mental well-being. I became involved in Birth Circle monthly meetings soon after moving to Athens county while pregnant with Lucia and joined the Board in 2014. I have worked (and so far still serve) as the Meals for Families coordinator for the last two years and have helped with many Birth Circle events and fundraisers over the years. In my spare time I enjoys knitting, sewing, and reading. The Birth Circle was instrumental in supporting my family through the first few years of parenthood and I am excited to further that work in the community.

A huge thank you to Claudia for her years of service to the Birth Circle, and to all who joined us though donations and participating in JIVE! to make our end of the year fundraising a success! Just as it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a village to continue our programing and outreach efforts to provide a nurturing community for our families. I am looking forward to a fresh beginning in 2018 and beg your patience as I learn how to fill this position that Claudia fulfilled so capably. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you feel that a conversation you started with the Birth Circle in 2017 has fallen through the cracks during the transition!

Birth Circle Director News

The Birth Circle exists because of all of you and your willingness to share your experiences, challenges and successes as parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, care providers, and friends.  We are so happy to be a part of this bright and vibrant community we call home!  We hope that you know how much we appreciate you!

After five years with The Birth Circle, I am “retiring” from the Directorship position.  I am so grateful for all of the friendships that I have gained over the years and will miss being a regular part of the group.  However, I am happy to say that my family and I will remain in the area and I plan to play a part in The Birth Circle in various ways as a volunteer.

I am excited to watch this important community organization continue to flourish and grow and I am confident that our new Director, Ariel Carver, alongside our Assistant Director Julia Farver and our hard-working Board, will do an incredible job carrying out The Birth Circle’s mission to educate, support and empower women and families as they journey through pregnancy, childbirth, the postpartum period, and early childhood. By making families aware of the resources available to them, we are hoping to build community.

THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR LIVES WITH US!

Warmly,
Claudia Bashaw

We have a bounty of fun to share with you these next few months and we hope to see you soon!

CREATING ART AS THERAPY FOR PREGNANCY AND INFANT LOSS
Wednesday September 27th
7-8:30pm
Athens Public Library

In preparation for October, which is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, we are putting on a unique monthly meeting.  If you have ever experienced the loss of a child, whether it be during pregnancy or after your child was born, or if you are a grandparent or friend of someone who has experienced a loss of this kind, you are welcome to join us for a special evening.  We will diverge from our regular meeting format to provide a supportive space for all to create artwork.  Your experience of loss may be recent or have happened a while ago, either way you are welcome.  There’s no pressure to have any ideas ahead of time or have any experience creating artwork, and you do not have to share your art with others.  This evening is about exploring the healing qualities that creating art can provide us as we grieve.  Lots of different supplies will be provided, so plan to join us for a truly special evening.
