June Monthly Meeting & Prepared Mommy Camp

Animal Train

Hello Everyone,

Here we are, just about halfway through the year and quickly approaching Summer!  This means that it is must be time for The Birth Circle’s Prepared Mommy Camp!

For the past four years, The Birth Circle has hosted this amazing program for young expecting women and we are excited to do it again in two weeks!  Thanks once again to generous funding from the Athens Foundation and support from Quidel’s DHQ CARES Fund, this year’s participants will learn about having a healthy pregnancy, how to prepare for labor and birth, how to care for their new baby, and how to take care of themselves and foster positive relationships with baby and others after baby is born.  Many of you are aware of this amazing program already, but if you aren’t please check out our Prepared Mommy Camp page for more information about this free program and how you can support it by volunteering, or donating new or gently used items for the participants.

In addition to the Prepared Mommy Camp, we have a wonderful monthly meeting planned called “Falling in Love with Baby”.  Brielle Clark from Hopewell Health Centers will lead the discussion with a presentation and all are welcome to share your experiences as the parents of a newborn. We hope you will join us later in the month for this fun topic!  See you soon and thanks for your support of The Birth Circle’s programs!

Warmly,

Claudia Bashaw

  • If you would like to volunteer your time, we are looking for help transporting participants to and from camp. We also need volunteers to pick-up meals from local restaurants and deliver them to camp.
  • If you offer pregnancy or baby-related goods or services (photography, art, clothing, etc), we are looking for donations to be used as prizes for the women at the end of their week of learning.

FALLING IN LOVE WITH BABY

Wednesday, June 29th

7pm to 8:30pm

Athens Public Library

June 2016 Flyer

Join Brielle Clark as she shares how falling in love with your baby should be the easiest part of becoming a mom, right? In some cases, past trauma and history of the way you were parented can get in the way of giving baby 100% of your heart. Being aware of our past and ready to put forth the extra effort in the beginning can make a big difference. The younger a baby is the more their brain is like a sponge soaking up anything and everything. Nurturing, love and kindness can promote better brain development as well as social-emotional development which is setting the stage to a bright future. The tiniest gestures like eye contact and talking to your baby will be engraved in your baby’s brain forever. There is no limit on the amount of love, comfort and support you give to your sweet baby.

Birth Circle monthly meetings are free and open to the public.
Children welcome to attend.
Co-sponsored by the Athens County Public Libraries.

Items from our Lending Library are available for you to check out and take home from Birth Circle meetings. In addition to books and other media, we have baby carriers, birthing balls and other supplies available for loan!

**DONATIONS NEEDED FOR OUR 4TH PREPARED MOMMY CAMP**

This June 20th-24th we are holding our 4th Prepared Mommy Camp thanks to support from the Athens Foundation.  This Camp is offered for free to pregnant women age 21 and younger, and provides a safe place where these young women can build their confidence as they learn more about healthy pregnancy, infant care and positive parenting.  The Camp also provides a place for to build bonds of support with one another, which often last well beyond the week we spend together.
Many of the participants are from rural, low-income families where access to resources may be limited.  We are hoping that with your help we can send them home with loads of supplies that will help improve the quality of life for them and their babies.  You can lend your support by donating products related to pregnancy and/or newborns (clothes, furniture, slings, diapers, nursing bras, etc.) which will go directly to our Camp participants.  For your donations, the Birth Circle will provide a receipt for tax purposes upon request.  We are expecting to serve 5 to 10 young moms and would be grateful for any quantity you can offer!

Book Drive for Prepared Mommy Camp

Prepared Mommy Camp is The Birth Circle’s program dedicated to helping teen and young moms get ready for parenthood. To enhance the knowledge each mother takes away from the Prepared Mommy Camp, the Birth Circle provides material for her to take home at the end of the week-long experience. Peggy Lewis has put together this book drive in order to include baby books for the moms as well.

A $20 donation will sponsor 2-4 books per person. With your help we can make sure that all participants have these awesome, entertaining books for their little ones!

If you have any questions contact Peggy Lewis at pgarcialewis@gmail.com.

Prepared Mommy Camp 2016

We are now accepting applications for the 2016 Prepared Mommy Camp which will be held June 20-24th at the Athens Area Friends Meeting House in Chauncey, Ohio. For the 4th year, the Birth Circle will help teen and young moms-to-be become confident and prepared for parenthood. The five-day camp is free thanks to generous support from the community as well as funding from the Athens Foundation. Participation includes lunch, essential baby items, transportation and childcare each day.

The intention of Prepared Mommy Camp is to share positive parenting skills and foster self-confidence, as well as help young moms build a long-term support network with each other and with more experienced parents in the community. Each day of Prepared Mommy Camp focuses on a particular topic: healthy pregnancy and relationships, birth and infant care, positive parenting, and planning for the future. Along with discussion of these topics, there are hands-on activities facilitated by former teen moms and time for the young women to ask questions, discuss the topics and get to know each other.

To enhance the knowledge each mother takes away from the camp, we provide materials for her to take home at the end of the week-long experience.

For more information or to register, email athensbirthcircle@gmail.com, call/text 740-517-8441 or fill out the online application below. Also visit our Prepared Mommy Camp page.

We are also looking for donations of baby and mommy-related items and supplies as well as gift cards that will go directly to the participants.  These items should be new or very gently used and in excellent condition.  Any help you are able to provide is very much appreciated!  If you have any questions about the Prepared Mommy Camp please feel free to contact me either by phone or email.  For those who might be interested in participating or helping us spread the word, click here to view or print this year’s flyer.  We look forward to another great Prepared Mommy Camp thanks to people like you!
