Brandi is the mother of two girls, Jorah (7) and Sorell (3).  She is the co-founder and executive director of The Birth Circle.  Brandi is also a certified doula through DONA international, a certified childbirth educator through the International Childbirth Education Association (ICEA) and teaches Informed Childbirth Prental and Childbirth Education Classes.  Brandi is currently pursuing a nursing degree at Hocking College.

Orignally from Pennsylvania, Brandi and her partner Scott live with their daughters in Athens where they raise organic vegetables for sale at the Athens Farmer's Market and share their knowledge of sustainable agriculture.

Tammy Baumgartel is the mother of three sons, Michael 25, Tony 23 and Nicholas 12. She holds a Master’s Degree in Counselor Education from Ohio University and worked as a therapist for 14 years, focusing primarily on women’s issues. She has spent the past 13 years working as a non-profit administrator and consultant with a strong emphasis on organizational development and grant writing. She is currently home schooling Nicholas.

Board Secretary & Fundraising Co-chair

Elaine has 4 boys and is currently a stay-at-home mom.  She is orginally from Michigan but has lived in Athens since 1999.  All her boys were born in hospitals:  two in big city hospitals (one with a midwife and one with an OB), and two here in Athens (one with Brandi as doula).  Elaine was an engineer in a former life.

Board Vice-President

Lucy and her husband David have two boys:  a two year old and a newborn.  She is currently a stay-at-home mom and lives west of Athens.  She is also a volunteer with AFS Intercultural
Programs/USA, a high school student exchange organization.  She is originally from Athens, grew up in Florida and California, returned for high school (Federal Hocking), and then graduated from Ohio University in 1989 with a BA with honors from the Honors Tutorial College.  She then left for the East Coast, returning in 2001 to be close to family.  She was one of the last years' of babies to be born at Sheltering Arms, and herself gave birth at O'Bleness, both times with a doula/birth helper utilizing HypnoBirthing techniques.  Prior to having her first child in 2004, she was a marketing/public relations manager.

Fundraising Co-chair

Lisa King and James Cochran share a board seat and are on the fundraising committee.  Lisa co- chairs the fundraising committee with Elaine Goetz.  Lisa and James have a rambunctious two year old son and live in a self-built straw bale house.  They attempted a home birth and after complications had an emergency cesarean section.  Lisa tries to assist midwives in births whenever possible.  Their plans are to home school and seek other opportunities for community activity clubs and child care options.  They are also experienced cloth diaper users.

Lisa's relevant professional experience involves nonprofit management, grant writing, event planning, and VISTA management in the environmental field.  James is currently getting a masters degree in Spanish and enjoys editing.


Danielle Leshaw

Danielle has 2 children:  a 1 year old girl and a 4 year old boy.  Danielle birthed her baby girl at home in the bathtub with the help of a midwife and birthed her son at Hocking hospital with the help of a doula.  When she's not spending time with the family, she's at Hillel, serving as the rabbi and director of the Jewish community of Athens and Ohio University.

Board President

Tamara is a homeschooling mother of 3 girls.  The first 2 were born in a 6-bed hospital in McCall, Idaho, and the third was born in Columbus with a doula.  Tamara has a BS in Wilderness Management from the University of Idaho and is a former park ranger and environmental educator.  She has lived in the Albany area since 2001.  Tamara is also very active with the La Leche League and is interested in issues of breastfeeding, pregnancy loss, and VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean).  Tamara also loves to talk homeschooling and car seats!

Volunteer Coordinator

Molly and her husband, Craig, had their first child in late December at O'Bleness, with the help of doula Angela Cross.  Before moving to Athens at the end of 2005, Molly lived in Albuquerque, NM where she worked as a political scheduler and magazine editor.  She now helps Craig with their business, Frog Ranch Foods, and serves as the Birth Circle volunteer coordinator.

Cathy is the mother of two girls.  Her first daughter, Anna, was born 8 years ago in a large hospital outside Washington, D.C.  Charlotte was born at home in February, 2006, with a midwife and a doula in attendance.  Cathy is originally from Circleville, but before returning to Ohio in 2003, she lived in Niger, West Africa as a Peace Corps Volunteer, Maryland, and Vermont.  Since college she has taught English (and English as a Second Language) in many diverse settings and is currently a part time Communications Instructor at Hocking College.
